The NPD Groups, Mat Piscatella, has released information detailing the best-selling video games of 2019, specifically the month of September. According to Piscatella, the Nintendo Switch was “once again the best-selling hardware platform of September and it remains the best-selling platform of 2019.”
Mat also mentioned that “hardware spending in September 2019 fell 22% vs YA, to $240 million. Year-to-date hardware spending has declined 21 percent versus a year ago, to $1.9 billion. Nintendo Switch is the only platform with sales gains both in September as well as year-to-date.
The NPD Group also released a list of the top 20 best-selling games for the month of October (Physical and Full Game Digital from the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation, Steam and Xbox platforms for publishers in the Digital Leader Panel) ranked on dollar sales:
- NBA 2K20
- Borderlands 3
- FIFA 20
- Link’s Awakening
- Madden NFL 20
- Ghost Recon: Breakpoint
- Gears 5
- Code Vein
- NHL 20
- Mario Kart 8
- Minecraft
- GTA V
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Spyro Reignited Trilogy
- Red Dead Redemption II
- Rainbow Six Siege
- Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville
- Marvel’s Spider-Man
- Catherine
- Breath of the Wild
As you can see, NBA 2K20 leads the pack as not only the best-selling game of September but it’s also the best-selling game of 2019 year-to-date. The title’s “launch month sales were also the highest for any sports game in history, exceeding sales of the previous record holder, NBA 2K29.”
Borderlands 3 also performed very well for the month of September as Gearbox’s looter shooter has set a “new franchise launch month sales record” and is the third best-selling game of 2019 year-to-date, following right behind the second-place holder, Mortal Kombat 11.
