The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening has tons of weird Mario references and easter eggs throughout the entire game and in the remake, all of these strange inclusions are back and more detailed than ever. Here are all of the weird Mario references & easter eggs in Zelda: Link’s Awakening.
Princess Peach
Princess Peach’s involvement in Link’s Awakening is actually kind of embarrassing as one of the animals in the games asks you to deliver a note to her crush and in the note is a pic of Peach. Now, I’m not saying that Christine the Goat is catfishing… but this definitely doesn’t look like her.
Cheep Cheep and Blooper
In the fishing mini-game over in Mabe Village, you can test your skill and see if you can catch any of the local fish to try to win a shell or two. You might even encounter a Cheep Cheep and a Blooper from the Mario universe if you get lucky.
Goomba’s and Pirahna Plants
In Link’s Awakening, there are a lot of times when you’ll be partaking in 2D platforming challenges and you’ll meet some of Mario’s famous adversaries like Goomba’s and Piranha Plants. Luckily, Link has a sword to cut them down to size, which can be easier than having to time a good jump.
Chain Chomp
A Chain Chomp named BowWow takes a huge spotlight in Link’s Awakening as Link’s partner in a short section of the game, acting as way more than just a small Mario reference. You can hold his chain like a leash and BowWow will even attack enemies for you –he’s such a good dog.
Thwomps
Another type of enemy that you’ll run into in Link’s Awakening’s 2D segments are different takes on the Thwomp enemy from Super Mario, you know the one that drops when you walk below it? This one in the image can only be destroyed by using the Pegasus Boots and breaking it apart.
Mario
You won’t find our mustachioed plumber in Link’s Awakening by name but Marin’s loving father, Tarin, bears an uncanny resemblance. He carries red and white mushrooms around, he has a bushy brown mustache, and just look at that nose.
Anti-Kirby
Kirby isn’t really a Mario reference but we’re going to add him in there because why not? Kirby or shall I say, Anti-Kirby, appears in some of the dungeons as an enemy and can kill you if you’re not careful.
Wind Fish Yoshi Egg
This reference is easily spotted in any of the promo materials for Link’s Awakening and it’s easily one of the biggest (literally) references from the Super Mario universe. The Wind Fish’s Egg is pretty much exactly the same as a pink Yoshi Egg. That’s it, that’s the easter egg –get it?
Spiny’s
In some of the dungeons, you’ll find some spiky little enemies called Spiny’s. Link’s sword doesn’t do any damage to the enemies but if you push the monster onto its back with your shield, its belly is then exposed.
Yoshi Doll, Boo, Shy Guy, Pokey & More Figures
There are several Nintendo figurines that you can collect in Mabe Village by playing at the Trendy Game shop. You can win a Boo, Pokey, a Yoshi Doll, and several other items that come from Mario’s world. There are even Pokey’s out in the wild as you can see in the image.
Those are all of the Mario references and easter eggs that we have found in Link’s Awakening. For more on the game, just search Twinfinite.
