NEO: The World Ends With You Pin Mutation Explained

Pins can change and grow in two different ways: they can evolve, and they can mutate. Evolution comes when Pins level up after being used in battle regularly. Mutation happens when Pins are used in battle and reach max level with specific characters.

The Pins tab in the menu provides details on each one you own, including a Pin’s element, element type, power, growth rate, and more. If the Evolution section under a Pin’s details says “???” in blue font that means it can mutate. If it says “Yes” the Pin will evolve normally.

You won’t know which characters to level up each Pin with to trigger a mutation, so there’s a lot of guesswork involved until you reach Week 3 Day 6 late in NEO: TWEWY. On that day, there’s a side quest that involves a girl named Marino Orihara.

Completing her quest and unlocking her connection with Friendship Points will grant you access to her Evolutionary Secrets ability. The ability tells you exactly what to do to trigger Pin mutation, instead of showing “???” in a Pin’s details section.

Marino can be found in the Tower Records area of the map, and her ability is one that’ll save you a lot of time when it comes to unlocking every Pin available to you. Once you complete the requirements, simply accept when the game asks if you want to mutate your Pin.

That’s everything you need to know about Pin Mutation in NEO: The World Ends With You. Be sure to check out our guide wiki for the game to find more tips, tricks, and walkthroughs.
