Even in the early hours of the game, as you’re exploring the first island in Temtem, you’ll definitely have noticed a few rocky walls here and there with grey stones on them. If you examine them and try to interact with them, the game will let you know that you need the Climbing Gear to proceed any further.

To cut to the chase, the Climbing Gear is currently not available in Temtem. It would appear that during this Early Access phase, players will not be able to access areas that require this key item as it’s simply not been put into the game just yet. It’s likely that it’ll be added in during the full release, or perhaps during a future pre-release build of the game in the coming months.

Either way, you can forget about climbing those rocky walls for now, and just focus on exploring the rest of the areas.

That said, the current Early Access build does allow you to get the Surfboard, which is a key item that lets you swim across the ocean and get to the other islands. Even without the Climbing Gear, there are still plenty of other locales you can check out in your spare time.
