Playstation Network May Be Offline for Several Days

This might take a while.

Today, PlayStation Network was affected by an unexpected outage that is preventing PlayStation owners from playing online games or accessing the store. According to Sony, this outage might last longer than their scheduled maintenance sessions. Sony have estimated that service may not be restored until Jan. 7.

Signing into a PlayStation console will show users a message reading “PlayStation Network is currently undergoing maintenance”. On a help page on PlayStation’s website, a notification appears at the top of the screen with a message about the current PlayStation Network outage.

If this is accurate, players might not be able to buy things on the PlayStation Store or play online multiplayer until Thursday. The timing of this outage is sure to affect a lot of gamers, as many of them may have gotten a new Sony console or PlayStation Store currency over the holiday season.

Sony’s official website for tracking PSN’s status is also confirming this outage, as it looks like all online functionality for PlayStation systems is affected. You may be able to use some online functions, but they are unlikely to work at full capacity.

The PSN outage might be solved before Thursday, but it’s probably best to hold off on that Rocket League tournament until everything is up and running.

Update: The help page has replaced the notice posted earlier with a new, less specific notice. There is currently no estimate for the end of the PlayStation Network outage.
