Tonight at The Game Awards we finally got our first look at Microsoft’s next console, the Xbox Series X. The release window is set for Holiday 2020.
The host of the show, Geoff Keighley, introduced this announcement as something that nobody saw coming and it certainly held off the surprise until the last second.
There were multiple shots of familiar franchises that are extremely popular such as Halo, FIFA, and Forza. There were wide panning shots of mountains terraforming and plants growing rapidly.
All throughout the trailer, there seemed to be a prism standing vertically while scrolling across the screen through these shots. Finally, in the end it was revealed to be the new Xbox console.
This new Xbox console appears to stand up vertically just like the Xbox 360, but the design looks to be closer to the more minimal design of the current Xbox One consoles with the matte black plastic.
Although it’s pictured vertically in the reveal trailer, the Xbox Wire release mentioned that it can also be placed horizontally as well.
Also worth noting is the controller that’s sitting next to the console. This controller for the Xbox Series X appears to be almost identical to the Xbox One controller.
However, that’s not much of a problem since it’s often seen as one of the most comfortable controllers ever made for console gaming.
When it comes to the technical specs this new console is an absoloute beast. It will be able to push 4K visuals at 60 FPS with the possibility of 120 FPS in the future. They also said that the console will be 8K capable.
It’s also now confirmed that the Xbox Series X will support Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) which is a technology that’s just starting to emerge on TVs this and will certainly become large next year.
This powerful machine will also feature hardware-accelerated ray tracing and it’s claimed that the SSD will essentially get rid of load times on the Series X.
Possibly even more impressive is that they will continue with backwards compatibility on the Series X. That doesn’t just include four generations of games, but also all Xbox One accessories.
The trailer for the Xbox Series X can be viewed in full below and the console will be launching next year in Holiday 2020.
