The free patch will include Mugman, Cuphead’s friend and automatic second player in co-op, as a playable character in single-player. Mugman will have his own completion theme after completing a stage, while both characters will receive multiple new fight introductions.

The update will include new art and animations, such as fully animating all cinematic cut-scenes, “new special effects to the Legendary Chalice’s granting of Super Arts, new enemy explosions, new puffs of smoke, new background details, and more.”

Studio MDHR is optimizing the game through the update which will result in shorter loading times, a smaller install size, and smaller patch sizes in the future. The studio also localized the game’s text and boss/level title card with curated fonts for French, Italian, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese.

The free content patch will be available for all platforms on April 18 including Xbox One, Mac, and through Steam or Windows Store on PC. The Nintendo Switch version announced today will contain all the new changes when it launches on April 18 alongside Xbox Live and achievement support in the future.

The game’s paid downloadable expansion Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course, announced at E3 last year, is still slated for sometime in 2019.
