id Software created “a lot of environment art” for Wolfenstein II revealed creative director Jen Matthies, adding that MachineGames and id work more closely than one might think. This isn’t a shock seeing as how both studios fall under Bethesda’s publishing umbrella, though it is good to note considering how id is known for developing the classic Wolfenstein 3D, a title which many regard as the pioneer of the FPS genre.

In turn MachineGames did “a lot of stuff for Doom”, though what exactly this entails is anyone’s guess. Wolfenstein II utilizes the id Tech engine to run in the first place, meaning the developer has its stake in the game in that regard as well.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus released today to great critical reception, so it looks like the help definitely paid off. Twinfinite itself gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars, citing a well-paced story, unique cast of characters, and fast, fluid, and challenging gameplay as some of the title’s highlights, though there are some awkward transitions between cutscenes and there’s little reason to come back after the credits roll.

It will be interesting to see how the game fares sales-wise considering the fact that Super Mario Odyssey and Assassin’s Creed Origins have also released today to rave reception from critics and fans alike.
