Overwatch: Doomfist’s Backstory and Origins

DOOMFIST’S BACKSTORY IN OVERWATCH

Recommended Videos

Doomfist is the latest character in Overwatch, whose name has been included in the game’s narrative since it was revealed in its first cinematic trailer back during Blizzcon 2014. Years later, he was finally released as a playable character with one of the most intriguing backstories for a character thus far.

Doomfist, or Akande Ogundimu, was the heir to a massive fortune produced by his Nigerian family through a prosthetic technology company. While he was young, Doomfist became obsessed with martial arts and combined numerous fighting styles together to become a recognized fighter by competing in tournaments. After he lost his right arm during the Omnic crisis, his family company created a prosthetic limb that made him even stronger, but ironically made him ineligible for the fighting competitions he loved so much.

After losing his passion, a young Doomfist was led to join the Talon organization after being hired as a mercenary by Akinjide Adeyemi, also called the second Doomfist or the Scourge of Numbani. This can get a little confusing, but there are actually three characters heralding the name of ‘Doomfist’ with the actual character in the game being the third and final name-holder. The first was named Adhabu Ngumi and was known as the “Savior” with little else revealed about him, the second was Akande Ogundimu’s teacher Akinjide Adeyemi who was a war profiteer within Talon who lead numerous raids against Numbani, and the final is the in-game Doomfist dubbed the “Successor” after he killed his own mentor Adeyemi.

Doomfist (the third) killed Adeyemi after climbing the ranks of Talon and becoming obsessed with the concept that humanity’s strength is gathered through conflict. Doomfist’s grander vision for the world conflicted with pulling off simple raids on Numbani and thus pushed him to kill his teacher and take the infamous Gauntlet as his own.

Doomfist’s plans for global conflict were confronted by an Overwatch strike team composed of Winston, Genji, and Tracer as seen in Doomfist’s Origin Story Trailer. After besting Genji and Tracer, he lost in a close-quarters fight with Winston, and was imprisoned for years in a maximum security prison managed by Helix Security International.

Reaper then helped Doomfist escape from prison, killing numerous guards in the process. Joining with Widowmaker, Reaper, and Sombra, he attempted an assassination on Katya Volskaya seen in the animated short “Infiltration,” and ordered Widowmaker to assassinate Mondatta that is also featured in a short titled “Alive.” After a Talon member named Vialli ordered a hit on Doomfist and Widowmaker, he confronted him at a masquerade ball and tossed him off a bridge, killing him.

Finally, some time later Doomfist returned to Numbani to get his Gauntlet back, and fought off a team of OR15 defense robots to do so. In the attacking spawn room for the Numbani map, you can see numerous OR15 robots smashed about the room with one shoved directly into the wall in the center. This map change was introduced during the lead-up to Doomfist’s official reveal. Doomfist’s destruction of the OR15 robots would lead to the creation of tank character Orisa, as young robotics prodigy Efi Oladele created her with old OR15 parts.
