It seems Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics are intent on squeezing every drop of potential income from their upcoming action-RPG, Marvel’s Avengers.

A blog post on the game’s official website today confirmed that while post-launch superheroes added to the base game will be free of charge, those who want to unlock new cosmetic options will have to get on board with a $10 Hero Challenge Card (the game’s Battle Pass equivalent) per character.

As spotted by Push Square, although the base game heroes’ Challenge Cards will be unlocked from the jump, starting with Hawkeye, players will need to purchase these cards separately for 1,000 Credits, which equates to $10 of real-world money.

Credits come in packs of 500, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000 with bonus credits for bigger packs.

Perhaps the one saving grace is that players can actually earn back the credits they’ve spent by working through the challenge on that Hero Challenge Card. Presumably, that means you’ll be able to use your credit reward to purchase a new Challenge Card, though you won’t be able to withdraw the money you’ve already spent. There’s no time limit on completing Challenge Cards either, thankfully.

As for what you get for each card, there are 40 tiers of free and premium rewards that include upgrade modules, outfits, takedowns, emotes, and more.

If you’re still on the fence about Marvel’s Avengers then perhaps next week’s final War Table episode will be of interest? It premiers on Sept. 1 and is set to reveal a new playable hero.
