A few days ago, Hideo Kojima announced that he had started up a new Kojima Productions studio after months of bad press surrounding his separation from long time partner Konami. While everyone more or less knew (or at least assumed) that the situation surrounding him and the publisher were bad enough for them to wipe his name from the box art of the game he created or even make him not go and accept an award he won, apparently things were so bad that he considered going to a desert island for a while to relax. Yes, seriously.
While speaking to the New Yorker about his new exclusive deal with Sony, Kojima said that he considered taking a mind cleansing trip and spoke about it with a “Hollywood friend”. Said friend deterred him away from that, and as Kojima describes it, his friend said the designer owed it to his own talent to keep going with no breaks:
“Hearing that affirmed to me that my role in this world is to keep on making big games for as long as I can. That is the mission I’ve been given in life.”
Kojima’s mission is obviously one that fans are happy he’s returning to, but here’s hoping he gets some rest in the near future. The man’s more than earned it, even if it’s just a five minute nap.
