Another action packed exclusive for PlayStation.

Koei Tecmo’s Ni-Oh is yet another game that has been in development for an incredibly long time. Originally announced back at E3 2005, the game looked to be some kind of action-RPG with inspirations from Ninja Gaiden and Dynasty Warriors.

Last year at Tokyo Game Show, Koei brought the game back into the light with a new trailer and style. In an interview with 4gamer, CEO of Koei Tecmo Kou Shibusawa talked about the company’s past, present and future. Of course one of the things that came up was Ni-Oh, one of Koei’s biggest titles releasing this year. The translation comes from the blog by Zhugeex.

Shibusawa talked about the “Sengoku Dark Fantasy” theme of the game as being finalized and how the company is building it from the ground up for the PlayStation 4. He also said the game is being optimized for 1080p, and 60fps on the system.

Apparently the game has been scrapped and rebuilt twice, the first time in 2005 was when the game was very much in a concept phase. Koei Tecmo changed the direction of the game in order to differentiate the gameplay from Dynasty Warriors. The second iteration of the game was being developed by Team Ninja and felt too familiar to Ninja Gaiden, so the project was reset and we now have the third iteration seen at TGS and PlayStation Experience.

Shibusawa commented that the game was always meant to take place in the “Sengoku” period with Yokai creatures appearing in it. He also called Ni-Oh a “dying game” and compared it to Demon’s Souls on the PlayStation 3.

Near the end of the interview Shibusawa said that Koei Tecmo has 30 different projects at various levels of development. Ni-Oh is currently on development exclusively for the PlayStation 4 and is expected to release sometime in 2016. A western release date has been confirmed but it isn’t certain if it will release at the same time worldwide.
