Elder mammoths are no joke.

Far Cry Primal brings the popular action series back into the Stone Age. That means instead of guns and trucks, we’ve got spears and furry animal friends, some of which were big enough to require forest restructuring.

Creative director Jean-Christophe Guyot took to the PlayStation Blog earlier today to answer questions about Far Cry Primal’s development, including challenges with animal AI.

“Having animals like the elder mammoth which is around twice the size of the regular mammoth forced us to adjust the navigation systems used by the AI,” said  said, “and we also had to adapt the structure of the flora and trees to make sure they had enough space.”

Once the forests could accommodate the unprecedented sizes, the team was able to let the AI roam free and interact with the ecosystem, and players, naturally.

Recently, Ubisoft unveiled a prehistoric gaming setup in honor of Primal’s incoming release, featuring a PlayStation 4, TV, and even pizza made out of actual stone. The team also had a bit of fun with Deus Ex, designing a special, Far Cry Primal version of Adam Jensen.

Far Cry Primal launches on Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC Feb. 23. You can check out our hands-on preview here.
