An evergreen franchise in Japan.

Dragon Quest XI launched in Japan on the 29th of July, and it has already sold 2,080,806 copies.

Although it is typically more popular as a handheld game, sales on both 3DS and PS4 platforms were comparable in its opening days on the market. The 3DS version sold 1,130,468 copies, while the PlayStation 4 version sold 950,338 copies.

It should be noted that the copies sold also include the sales from the Dragon Quest XI Double Pack Hero’s Sword Box, New Nintendo 2DS XL Dragon Quest Liquid Metal Slime Edition, and PlayStation 4 Dragon Quest Loto Edition. They do not, however, account for digital versions, which we can only assume would push the total number sold even higher.

The game released last week in Japan, but it has been confirmed that a translated version will come to the west under the name “Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age”. It is expected to launch in 2018.

The PS4 and 3DS versions boast entirely different aesthetics. The handheld version uses a nostalgic sprite-based graphics, while PS4 runs full 3D stylized graphics. The Nintendo Switch version is still in development.
