Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition E3 2015 Hands-On Preview

Remasters are becoming sort of a dirty word in video games. It’s almost as if you can’t look away for a few seconds before some company decides that they’re going to re-package (and re-sell) one of their older titles for the latest generation of consoles to make a quick buck. But, there are those few times when it is crystal clear that the developers want to provide the absolute best experience to players, while also throwing in a bevy of additional awesomeness. Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition is a perfect example of just that.

For starters, you have a completely remastered version of Devil May Cry 4, with crisp 1080p visuals and a steady 60fps framerate the combat has never looked better. On top of that, you have a ton of added goodies that really expand the whole experience. Three new playable characters (Virgil, Triss, and Lady) are usable in the Bloody Palace (a combat challenge mode) and story missions where they replace Nero and Dante.

Each of the new characters offers a fresh departure from the Devil May Cry 4 action. Virgil fights as you’d expect him to, switching between Yamato and two other melee weapons while using his abilities for ranged attacks. Trish has a unique approach to combat that has her using twin pistols, a large blade, and her fists for fighting. Activating certain moves frees her up to use a larger variety of attacks making her a versatile, strategic character. Finally is Lady, a powerful fighter with a love for big guns. She also happens to be the slowest fighter in the game, making timing key for using her, but once you get the hang of smashing demons with a bazooka you won’t ever wanna go back.

Using each of the different characters in the Bloody Palace (unlocked after beating the game) allows all of the players to really shine. Focusing solely on whooping hellish ass really allows one to appreciate the detail and focus that went into crafting each of these characters. There’s also the added bonus of setting an impossibly high score for your friends to be envious of. What was created here is truly a labor of love.

The best thing about Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition is its price. You get the remastered game, new characters, and new modes all for just $25. Oh, and did we mention that it’s available on June 23 (next Tuesday)? Yeah, all of this awesomeness is right around the corner.
