Star Citizen Hits $40 Million Milestone

A little while back, I wrote about Star Citizen, Chris Roberts’ ambitious PC space-sim. At the time, in October, over $20 million had been raised through crowdfunding efforts. Now that figure has doubled.

To be exact, as of writing this, Star Citizen has raised $40,376,792. Let that sink in for a second. Forty million dollars. I’d hazard a guess that makes this the most successfully crowdfunded project in history.

I don’t need to tell you (but I will) that $40 million is the sort of budget most AAA games have. Which is exactly the point: Chris Roberts hopes to create a AAA-quality game without the limitations most studios enforce. And by the looks of things, it’s gonna be insanely good.

The next funding goal for Star Citizen is $42 million, an homage to Douglas Adam’s Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. It will involve an in-game Wiki (on a custom-built, in-game OS) which lets the players add and edit facts as they play. I mean, how fucking cool is that!
