Game Director for World of Warcraft Now Working on Unnamed Blizzard Title

Passing the torch.

Blizzard, WoW legion

With the latest expansion for the smash hit MMORPG World of Warcraft already released and being devoured by fans, the Game Director Tom Chilton has left the series. In a  blog post today, Chilton explains that he is has decided to step down as WoW’s Game Director so he can focus on another unnamed project at Blizzard. This was a big move for Chilton since he has been working on this game since its release and him moving on will leave many to wonder how his successor, Ion Hazzikostas, will do as the next Game Director.

Chilton was very clear that he believes that Hazzikostas is more than a worthy successor to take the lead for World of Warcraft. In his post, he explained that Hazzikostas has “…been an integral part of the team for more than eight years and has contributed to so many aspects of the game’s development – from class design to encounter design and nearly everything in between.” He went to explain that the “…future for World of Warcraft continues to be bright…” which could easily indicate more content that’s eventually going to release.

While many fans are saying their final goodbyes to Chilton, many of us are beginning to wonder exactly what project he is moving on to. There’s no shortage of speculation and theories to be purposed, but it will be interesting to see how he does working on a game that’s not an MMORPG. Given Blizzard usually takes a fair amount of time to develop, we may not know what this title is for another year or so. Regardless, we wish you the best of luck in your endeavors Tom Chilton. Thanks for creating so many great memories for fans of the series, you will be missed.
