We’re not even a month into Hearthstone’s latest card expansion, Whispers of the Old Gods, and already the community has discovered innovative ways to smash, zap, and heal their way into the coveted Legend rank. Let’s explore some of the best standard format decks Whispers of the Old Gods has to offer so far and hopefully score you some of those win streaks in the future.
Savjz’s Yogg and Load Hunter
When Team Liquid’s Savjz first premiered this deck on stream, the Twitch chat was fairly skeptical. However, after a few games it proved to be far more powerful than most had thought.
This deck relies very heavily on the combination between Lock and Load and low-cost hunter spells in an effort to survive and chip down your opponent’s health slowly. When enough spells have been played and the mana lines up, Yogg-Saron, Hope’s End enters the board with hopes of swinging the game your way (if not winning it altogether).
Watch out though, as Yogg-Saron can be pretty unpredictable and may just end up sending two Pyroblasts directly into your own face! Though sometimes unreliable, Savjz’s Yogg and Load is also unpredictable, incredibly fun, and easily makes its way onto our countdown.
Ryzen’s Miracle Rogue
Miracle Rogue is back with a vengeance, with this iteration of the classic deck created and used by Ryzen to hit Legend.
With the recent nerfs to Blade Flurry, this version removes much of the former’s AoE potential in favor of more low-cost spell cards to cycle with Gadgetzan Auctioneer. Xaril, Poisoned Mind and Tomb Pillagers provide good board presence and synergize well with their additional useful spells. Finish your opponent quickly with a super buffed Edwin Vancleef or double Cold Blood on almost any minion. You may just be lucky enough to get both at once!
Miracle Rogue has been a solid deck in just about every meta since the launch of Hearthstone, and this Whispers of the Old Gods iteration may be its strongest form yet.
Kolento’s Deathrattle Priest
It’s about time we looked at a deck with one of the Hearthstone expansion’s titular old gods. Many new decks attempt to feature N’Zoth, The Corruptor, but most fall short in comparison to Kolento’s Deathrattle Priest.
Using mid-cost deathrattle minions with powerful effects, this deck has a board-dominating late game finish using N’Zoth to bring back all previously defeated deathrattle minions with the cost of only ten mana. The name of the game is Auchenai for most Priests, and this deck is no exception. Using Auchenai Soulpriest and its synergy with Circle of Healing, Flash Heal, Darkshire Alchemist, and Corrupted Healbot, controlling the board should prove no issue. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to heal their opponent for damage?
ModernLeper’s Zoo Warlock (Variant)
You probably guessed it was coming. This deck is a variant of ModernLeper’s current Zoo Warlock deck, wherein he trades out one Argent Squire for a Dark Iron Dwarf. The new Zoo uses one and two cost minions to bolster Darkshire Councilman’s attack along with Gormok The Impaler to retain board control.
Forbidden Ritual helps you play to curve and combos very well with both Darkshire Councilman and Knife Juggler. With your board nearly full and your hand nearly gone, drop Doomguard and Sea Giant to clean up the board and secure your win. But don’t forget to toss a “Well Played!” at the end, it’s only good manners.
Amaz’s C’Thun Druid
We almost got through a whole list without mentioning one of the biggest additions to all of Hearthstone, but have no fear for C’Thun is here!
Amaz’s C’Thun Druid deck is quite expensive, but frighteningly devastating. This deck relies on fast mana ramp and C’Thun-buffing minions early game with huge, game-winning minions late game. Brann Bronzebeard contributes with double C’Thun buffs while Fandral Staghelm removes those pesky choices and gives you true Druid of the Claw and Mire Keeper value. Klaxxi Amber-Weaver and Twin Emperor Vek’lor serve to command the board with huge health pools and taunts. When your ready to play C’Thun, just sit back and watch as he carries you to victory in his admittedly gross, yet somehow comforting tentacles.
Amaz’s C’Thun Druid is a force to be reckoned with, so play your cards right and it may send you hurdling up the ladder in no time.
