Today Turtle Rock Studios, developers of titles Left 4 Dead and more recently Evolve, alongside Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment revealed that the two companies are working on a new zombie co-op shooter called Back 4 Blood.
In what appears to be a spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead, Turtle Rock Studios is going back to their most successful idea, and refreshing it for the current-generation.
“We’re not resting on any past laurels. Our goal is to take what we’ve learned and push forward. We know that is a tall order,” said Phill Robb, co-founder and creative director of Turtle Rock Studios.
The team behind Back 4 Blood will have past successes, and failures, to learn from. Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 was incredibly popular and helped define a genre. On the other hand Evolve failed to capture an audience in the same way.
Evolve suffered from a poor business model and its gameplay, while decent enough, wasn’t so great to overpower the missteps made at launch.
While we don’t have anything really to look at yet, the developers did provide some interesting details via a FAQ that released alongside the announcement.
We know that it’s a “new gaming universe” and will have “new features and state-of-the-art technology.”
It will release on PS4, Xbox One and PC. A Switch version has not been mentioned yet, but not ruled out either. There’s no price yet, but it will be a “premium, AAA title.” There will be a campaign, a PvP mode, and microtransactions have not been decided on yet.
There is no release date or release window yet for Back 4 Blood, so your guess is as good as ours on that front.
And by the way, if you were or are still pulling for Evolve 2, don’t ask Turtle Rock Studios. They addressed that issue in the FAQ page too:
Where is Evolve 2? How dare you!
