Why the New Battlefield Is Called Battlefield 1

Confused? Let DICE explain.

Battlefield 1

Today marked the reveal of the next Battlefield game, an ambitious title set in World War I. With over ten Battlefield games released so far, the last numbered entry being Battlefield 4, one might wonder why this newest entry is titled Battlefield 1.

In their World Premiere livestream, the development team explained the thematic meaning behind the name. “This is the dawn of all out war and it’s the genesis of modern warfare,” said Senior Producer Aleksander Grøndal. “This is why we called it Battlefield 1.”

The livestream team went on to outline the contrast between World War 1’s history and our modern technology, a pairing they believe is fresh and hasn’t been done in a long time.

Grøndal also discussed the benefits of heading back to the World War 1 era, including the divergent technology used at the time. Battlefield 1 will bring many of these mechanics into the fold, featuring horses, warships, biplanes, and brutal, close-quarters combat. The game also looks to take players to new fronts involved in the global conflict, including the deserts of Arabia.
