During Ubisoft’s financial conference call for investors and analysts related to the second quarter of fiscal year 2020/2021, CEO Yves Guillemot talked about the next generation.
Guillemot expressed optimism for the commercial performance of the next-gen consoles both this year and the next.
That being said, he also mentioned the expectation that they will be in short supply this year.
“What we can say about the next-gen consoles is that they will certainly be in short supply compared with demand and we’re very happy that all of our games for the end of this year are taking full advantage of these new consoles.
We expect next year to be a great year for next-gen consoles as well and demand will also be extremely strong”
Asked to comment on Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda and whether their commitment to Xbox Game Pass could be a killer application for the next-generation, Guillemot took the chance to discuss all first-parties.
“In fact, we’re in a very interesting industry because there are now more and more forms to sell our games. What we see is that the quality of the experience remains a very important point.
When you create exceptional games people come and buy them where they are and in the form they want. We’ll see more and more possibilities in the future to consume those games.
So yes, Microsoft is doing a good job and there are also other ways to do good business. Sony is progressing extremely well as well with their way of doing things, which is different from Microsoft.
We have also Nintendo that has a completely different approach as well that is working fine. On top of that, we’re seeing these two streaming platforms that are coming. We think that over time they’re going to grow the market for the industry as well.”
Guillemot added that mobile is also showing good growth and there will be games that will work both on mobile and high-end platforms in the future.
