Titanfall 2 releases today, right in the middle of two FPS titans: Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty Infinite Warfare. Both Titanfall and Battlefield are published by EA, so it seemed odd that these titles would release so close to one another. But there apparently is a reason.
During a recent interview with PlayStation lifestyle, Titanfall 2 producer Drew McCoy was asked about the strange timing of the game’s release. “I actually don’t know where the decision came from,” he said. “I just know it was locked in a long time ago and there was no changing it.”
So it appears EA wanted Titanfall 2 to make it out in time for the holiday season. It boasts a futuristic, sci-fi aesthetic that sets it apart from Battlefield 1’s WWI setting enough that the two won’t directly compete. But it does set up Titanfall to go up against Call of Duty, another futuristic FPS featuring wall running and robots.
The two shooters are very different beasts, however, with Titanfall’s campaign having a larger focus on platforming elements and working in tandem with the game’s titular robots. But with the original Titanfall releasing as an Xbox and PC exclusive and not reaching a wide audience, there was a lot of talk that shipping the sequel at the end of October could be sending it out to die, no matter how good it is. And it is fantastic, according to our recent review, which praised the shooter’s smooth feel and varied gameplay.
Titanfall 2 is out today for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
