Netflix has revealed a first proper look at the main protagonists of its upcoming The Witcher adaptation, which is due to release later this year as an eight-episode series, and they look much better than what we’d seen previously.

A Tweet today from Netflix’s “See What’s Next” account highlighted the images with the caption “It begins @witchernetflix.”

Back in October of 2018, the streaming service unveiled a snippet of unedited footage of Henry Cavil playing Geralt, which received a mixed reaction from the franchises’ passionate following. Later, an image of Nilfgaardian soldiers wearing armor that looked slightly budget also found its way onto the internet and earned a similarly lukewarm response.

What we’ve been shown today, though, looks of a more polished quality that’s more in line with the video game series the audience knows and loves. It’s amazing what a bit of post-production can do, right?

Details on the show’s storyline are still scant, but it will presumably follow an adapted version of one of the Andrzej Sapkowski novels. Sapkowski is actually working on the Netflix series as a creative consultant, so here’s hoping his input will result in more authenticity.

“I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing,” he said in a press release last year.

The franchises’ popularity as a video game IP still remains strong today if developer CD Projekt Red’s financial report is anything to go by. Continued sales of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt were said to be its primary revenue driver despite launching over four years ago.

It’s little wonder, then, they’ve opted to release a version for Nintendo’s Switch hardware, which will launch later this year.
