Back when seemingly everyone with a smartphone was playing Pokemon Go in the summer and early fall, some players were getting in trouble by wandering onto private property. In a few sad cases, a focus on playing the game over watching players’ surroundings even lead to tragic deaths.
After missing a planned July launch, The Pokemon Go Plus bracelet was finally released in September with the intent of making the game safer to play. But now The Pokemon Company and Nintendo are looking into releasing a second wearable device intended to make playing the game even safer.
“We intended to make a game for people to play outdoors, instead of at home,” Pokemon Company President Tsunekazu Ishihara told Nikkei in a recent interview. “The potential that players could become too involved in playing the game [that they might walk into danger] was already an issue at an early stage.
“To avoid the danger, we also released Pokemon Go Plus, the smartphone-linked wearable device, so that Pokemon Go players do not have to always be looking down at their smartphone screens. Together with Nintendo, we are thinking of developing a new device that can be played more safely.”
Ishihara did not share when the device might release, how much it might cost, how it would be safer than the Plus bracelet, or even what type of device it could potentially be.
