After getting over the nostalgic hype of Nintendo releasing the Mini NES, we were quickly brought back down to reality after learning that the miniature console won’t support classic cartridges, nor will it allow you to download other NES games from the virtual store. That’s a little unfortunate. In a Q&A session with Polygon, Nintendo gave us a few details about the games and the controllers would work with the Mini NES.
“The console is a standalone device, so it cannot connect to the internet or any external storage devices. The 30 games included with the system were chosen to provide a wide variety of top-quality, long-lasting game-play experiences.
In addition to the NES Classic Controller, the Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro are also compatible with the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition. Both can be plugged directly into the console; however, when using two controllers, one of them must be the NES Classic Controller.
The new NES Classic Controller has a different connector than the original NES controllers and accessories, so they are not interchangeable.”
The console will of course come with HDMI output, so it’s clear that the Mini NES is meant to be a simple ‘plug and play’ device at a low cost.
