The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening Gets a Full Remake on Switch in 2019

Nintendo capped off their latest direct with a big surprise announced, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is getting a full-fledged remake on Switch. A short trailer was shown off for the title, displaying some highly stylized graphics that heavily lean toward a chibi art style.

Originally released 1993 on the Game Boy, Link’s Awakening introduced brand new characters to the franchise, as Link found himself shipwrecked on the mysterious Koholint Island. In order to escape from the island, Link has to travel to different dungeons and collect instruments that will wake the powerful Windfish.

The trailer shown off today only gives us a brief glimpse of gameplay, but the remake is using some high-quality textures for its world. The art style is strikingly different from anything we’ve seen in The Legend of  Zelda series before, and it’s almost cartoony in a way.

Still, it seems like this will be a straight remake of the original, even including the 2D segments. You can take a look at the full trailer down below. More news will be coming in the future, and we’ll make sure to update you should we learn anything new on Link’s Awakening.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is set to release sometime in 2019 on Nintendo Switch.

There’s plenty of other news announced during the Direct, like the brand new action game Astral Chain from Platinum, or loads of new details on Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
