The Nintendo Switch Has Already Outsold the Wii U’s Lifetime Sales in Japan

Great news for the Switch! Bad news for the Wii U.

Nintendo Switch, splatoon 2, splatoon

The fact that the Nintendo Switch has been selling almost as fast as the PlayStation 2 (AKA the best-selling console of all time) did in Japan is an incredible statistic, and really shows how successful the system has been in its home territory. We’ve now learnt about another interesting statistic about Nintendo’s current hardware as well as its predecessor; the Switch has already outsold the Wii U’s lifetime sales in Japan in less than a year of it being on the market. According to Twitter user mochi_wsj, Famitsu reported that as of Dec. 24, the Nintendo Switch has amassed a total of 3.3 million units sold, overtaking the amount of Wii U’s sold since its release in December of 2012.

This shows just how much more the concept of the Switch has caught on with the Japanese audience compared to the Wii U’s. What makes this even more impressive is that the Switch has been notoriously hard to find in Japan. In some cases, people would have to take part in a a lottery which would determine if they were lucky enough to get the opportunity to purchase the system. Even with this scarcity, the fervor for the console has led it to outsell the Wii U. It just goes to show how little interest there was in that system in Japan.

Suffice it to say, the Switch’s successful momentum hasn’t slowed down quite yet. It’ll be interesting to see if the system can keep this up in 2018.
