SuperData’s monthly report tracking digital video game spending is in for July, and the big takeaway is Ghost of Tsushima’s impressive 1.9 million digital sales that make it Sony’s fastest-selling new IP ever.
The numbers outpace both Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone, which sold 1.9 million and 1.3 million digital copies respectively over their first two months on the market.
Ghost of Tsushima’s performance was also enough to see it go down as the biggest ever console launch of a game in July. Incidentally, Sony’s The Last of Us Part II broke the same record for June just a month earlier.
Other notable figures include 555,000 digital copies sold of Nintendo’s Paper Mario: The Oragami King, which wasn’t as strong as other recent games from the publisher still did better than 2019’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
Pokemon GO also had an exceptionally good month with July actually going down as its second-best ever, just 0.4% down on its August 2016 launch month. This is attributed to the July Pokemon Go Fest event, which cost $15 to enter.
Finally, Garena Free Fire has quickly risen to third spot on SuperData’s top-earning mobile games thanks to its success in emerging markets like south-east Asia and Latin America. The game benefits from being able to run on low-spec mobile devices.
In related news, Ghost of Tsushima July sales in North America were enough to see it top the NPD Group’s monthly chart tracking.
