You thought returning favorites like Snake, Wolf, and Ice Climbers would make the wait for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate a difficult one. You assumed newcomers such as Simon Belmont, Ridley, and King K. Rool would make the months pass at a glacial pace. The game’s insane roster may serve as its main selling point, but the wait has gotten even longer thanks to some smashing, must-own peripherals.
While players will be able to buy either physical or digital editions of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, that goes without saying in this day and age. What doesn’t always goes without saying is the existence of a special version of a game, but Ultimate’s official site has been updated to reveal a Special Edition that comes in a stylish, matte black case (yes, it is a SteelBook) emblazoned with the franchise’s iconic logo. Oh, and this edition comes bundled with a black and white Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, also emblazoned with the symbol, because who would want to play the game with the Joy-Con Controllers? That’s like playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl with the Wii Remote or playing Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary with the Kinect.
Of course, gamers can purchase the Pro Controller separately, but odds are most will want to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with a GameCube Controller, the go-to controller for smashers since 2001. Lucky for us, another wave of Smash Bros. GameCube Controllers will be released alongside Ultimate, and they too will feature the franchise’s logo. Since GameCube Controllers aren’t wireless, Nintendo will also release some GameCube Controller adapters that plug into the Nintendo Switch’s USB ports. While Wii U owners likely own the latter two items, the console didn’t exactly sell like hotcakes, so many gamers will probably be in the market for these must-have items. Moreover, the UK version of the Special Edition comes bundled with the GameCube Controller and adapter instead of the Pro Controller, which really makes you wonder who’s getting the better package.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the controllers, and controller adapter are currently up for pre-order on sites such as Best Buy, Amazon, EBGames, Target, and Walmart, and the Special Edition and Digital Edition are “coming soon.” Unless you live in the UK, in which case the Special Edition is already sold out.
