The announcement was made during the pre-show, praising the work that Yoshinori Ono and his team at Capcom have done. The title won out over Killer Instinct Season 3, King of Fighters XIV, and Pokken Tournament.

Street Fighter V may have won Best Fighting Game but it had a bit of a rocky launch in February. The game’s online mode did not function very well and several main modes were missing. But the team cleaned things up in the following months, adding in new characters, modes, and even offering some free content for players who stuck with the game through its rougher moments. But the mix of new and old characters and some stellar new mechanics pleased fans of the series and kept it in the public eye throughout 2016.

Street Fighter V is very much a platform and will continue to be supported until 2020, according to Capcom, so maybe we’ll see it come back at future Game Awards. This continued support will include characters, stages, and possibly new modes. There will be no iterations on the title, which has been a tradition for the series.

Stay tuned to Twinfinite for more news from the 2016 Game Awards as it unfolds over the course of the evening.
