Today Cloud Imperium Games announced and opened a brand new “Free Fly” event for Star Citizen, also providing some rather interesting gameplay stats.
The event, which will let anyone download and try the current Alpha 3.7 for free, kicks off today and ends at midnight PDT on November 3, giving you a few days to make your own mind about the game.
You can get started here. Incidentally, as personal piece of advice, you should definitely install the game on an SSD if you have one, as it improves performance considerably.
Additionally, discounted “starter packs” will be made available, providing an entry-level permanent access to the game for $40.
The free flight event will provide access to five ships as follows:
- Consolidated Outland Mustang Alpha – Consolidated Outland’s ship for those wanting to push the limits a little more when starting out, the Mustang has good maneuverability and some space for cargo.
- Banu Defender – a multi-crew fighter whose patchwork design features both Xi’an thrusters, Tevarin shields, and four Singe tachyon cannons. Though cargo space is limited, the Defender features modest accommodations for its crew and provides easy access to components.
- Roberts Space Industries Aurora MR – A balance of function and performance, the Aurora MR comes with cargo capacity and guns to ensure freight gets there safely.
- Drake Cutlass Black – Drake’s multicrew Cutlass is highly versatile, with combat and cargo prowess.
- Avenger Titan – A former police ship with a cargo hold for light freight and courier abilities.

On top of the Free Fly news, we also get an interesting infographic with a lot of gameplay data related to Star Citizen, tracking what existing backers have done in the game so far.
Star Citizen is a crowdfunded project, and the total of pledges made so far is at $239,560,193.
2,392,021 accounts have been created, even if we have no precise data on how many of those are paying supporters, as opposed to accounts made for Free Fly events like the one announced today.
For the sake of full disclosure, you should keep in mind that the author of this article has been among the backers of Star Citizen since the original Kickstarter campaign a long time ago.
