Splinter Cell fans rejoice! Ubisoft has today announced that Toronto Studio has begun development on a remake of the original game, which will be built from the ground up using the Snowdrop engine. To celebrate the return of a beloved franchise that has been on hiatus for far too long, a featurette video recapping the development of the original game is included with today’s news.

Below you’ll hear from some of the developers that launched the original game 19 years ago who share their understanding of what made the first game such a huge hit, and some of what they have planned for the remake moving forward.

The upcoming remake marks the first major Splinter Cell release since Blacklist in 2013, and while it perhaps isn’t quite the sequel that fans have long been asking for, it is at least a positive sign for the series moving forward. Up until now, Ubisoft has seemed reluctant to revisit Splinter Cell despite a hardcore fanbase urging them to do so, with only cameo appearances in other games such as Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six Siege filling the void.

There’s no word yet on a launch window, but given the game is in such early development it’s unclear whether we’re going to see the remake released in 2022.

In related news, Ubisoft is also working on Splinter Cell VR game, which was first announced back in September of 2020 but of which little has been spoken of since.
