It's gonna be a long, strange journey.

shin megami tensei, deep strange journey

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux is barreling toward a release here in the West, but for now we’ve got some gameplay clips of the upcoming remake that show off what we can expect. It’s all in Japanese, but you can already tell it’s a lot clearer and a lot better-looking than its predecessor.

For those unfamiliar with Strange Journey, it’s a Shin Megami Tensei adventure that’s acting as an expanded edition of the original 2010 Nintendo DS release. It’s the fourth game in the series chronologically, and it follows a special task force assembled by the United Nations to investigate a distortion in Antarctica.

It’s serious business, because it could actually end up swallowing the world whole. When you run into that kind of thing, it’s a pretty scary thing to contend with. It’s called the Schwarzwelt, and if it weren’t enough that it’s basically a malevolent black hole, it’s also filled with demons.

These quick gameplay clips offer a glimpse into the game, but you can play the original version released on Nintendo DS right now if you’re impatient. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait for Strange Journey Redux to release for $39.99 on Nintendo 3DS sometime in early 2018.
