Roll Around at the Speed of Sound as Sonic in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD, Sonic

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD doesn’t monkey around when it comes to characters. The upcoming game features a bushel of encapsulated simians, but it wouldn’t be a true Sega experience without a reference to another Sega title. For Banana Blitz HD, the company opted to insert its mascot as a “secret” playable character.

As some of you know, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD is the HD remaster of the game by the same name. The original Banana Blitz was a Nintendo Wii exclusive, but the HD port will launch on multiple consoles. While the game will feature numerous obvious updates, such as improved graphics, it will also include optimized control schemes for each platform to make up for the lack of motion controls (Nintendo Switch notwithstanding).

According to Sega’s Twitter feed, players can unlock Sonic the Hedgehog in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD, which is a first for the Monkey Ball franchise. As you might expect from the blue blur, Sonic is blazingly fast, but the nostalgia trip doesn’t end there.

Sonic, Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD

Whenever you play as Sonic, the game’s bananas magically transform into golden rings. And yes, picking them up plays the iconic jingle from the Sonic games.

However, Sonic isn’t the only trick (or treat) up Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD’s sleeve. According to a press release, the game will also include optional costumes for the game’s main monkeys —and just in time for Halloween. The announcement and its trailer feature Monkey Ball’s protagonist AiAi in a pirate costume, as well as the secondary character GonGon in a Frankenstein’s monster suit, so players can look forward to plenty of unlockable goodies.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD will release October 29th for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam.
