Rocket League’s Rocket Pass Coming Later This Year

Rocket League, most played games, monthly players

Rocket League developer Psyonix revealed more details today about the game’s Rocket Pass system originally announced in its summer 2018 roadmap for updates last month.

In a blog post, the studio elaborated on the system which will offer new in-game items and more customization options by reaching certain tiers in the pass, similar to the Dota 2 and Fortnite battle passes. The Rocket Pass will come in both free and premium versions, with the premium version costing 10 keys or $9.99 in real money.

The free pass will have new cosmetics, player banners, titles, and decryptors, while the premium upgrade gives the same alongside new car bodies and keys. The premium version includes “Pro Tiers” that unlock after completing all initial tiers, and rewards players with a “random Painted and/or Certified version of a Premium Rocket Pass item you’ve already unlocked.”

Unlocking content in both versions requires earning enough XP to level up a tier in the pass. Each tier will require the same amount of XP, and the pass will give XP boosts and awards to advance through tiers quicker. Players can also buy tiers outright with keys.

While the Rocket Pass is similar to Fortnite: Battle Royale’s Battle Pass, it will not feature a challenge system in order to not “disrupt the competitive balance of Rocket League by encouraging users to hunt down specific stats like Saves or Assists.” The developer is considering adding challenges to future passes, but with goals such as playing matches or earning team objectives.

The Rocket Pass is slated to come to all platforms “later this summer,” and Psyonix plans to offer several passes per year with unique content in each one. The studio has not decided how many tiers will be included in the first pass, but wrote on Reddit that it could take an estimated 100 hours to complete, not including pro tiers.
