Resident Evil 7 Story and Combat Details Leak from ESRB (Spoilers)

Slight story and gameplay spoilers inside.

With Resident Evil 7, Capcom is taking its long-running survival-horror series back to its roots by slowing things down and refocusing on scaring players after the developer progressively moved the series more toward action than survival over the last few numbered releases. We already know that Resident Evil 7 is set in a spooky Louisiana plantation and that the player perspective has moved to first-person, but now we have some of the specifics about what’s going down on that plantation.

SPOILERS AHEAD

According to an ESRB listing that was quickly removed after being spotted by Twitter user @Wario64, players Resident Evil 7 players will take control of Ethan, “a man searching for his missing wife in a derelict mansion.” Ethan’s existence in the game was previously revealed through a name drop in Resident Evil 7’s Gamescom trailer, but we didn’t know until now that Ethan was the name of the player-character.

Ethan will use an arsenal of pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives and chainsaws to fight against “mutant creatures.” Combat will be punctuated by “realistic gunfire, screams of pain, and exaggerated blood-splatter effects.”

Unsurprisingly, that means players should expect no shortage of gore and “intense” violence, with some areas showing mutilated corpses with exposed organs. Resident Evil 7 cut-scenes will be particularly violent, featuring limb dismemberment via chainsaw or shovel. Yep, some poor bastard’s leg apparently gets lopped off at the knee with a shovel. Sounds painful, but it could be worse — another character has his face impaled by a shovel. Comparatively, losing a leg sounds almost pleasant.

And characters apparently won’t restrain their dialogue any more than their physical violence. The ESRB says you can expect to hear strong language such as “fuck” and “shit” in dialogue.
