It was announced today that David Bowie, legendary singer and songwriter, passed away at the age of 69 after a long battle with cancer. On Twitter, you’ll find that quite a few video game icons and developers, including Hideo Kojima and Quantic Dream, have expressed their grief and respect over the sad news.
Artwork of the glam rock singer by Final Fantasy artist Yoshitaka Amano has also resurfaced on the internet in light of today’s announcement. It’s fitting that Amano should have released artwork of Bowie himself. Bowie’s unique image in the world of rock music certainly proved to be a great fit for Amano’s own ethereal art style.
You can check out the rest of Amano’s fascinating take on David Bowie over at his official site. Bowie has also been said to have appeared in several video games where certain characters borrowed his likeness. Balthier from Final Fantasy XII and Demyx from Kingdom Hearts II come to mind. More recently, Midge Ure’s lovely cover of Bowie’s ‘The Man Who Sold The World’ was used as the opening track to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
