You can pay if you want.

It has now been revealed by Bethesda Softworks that their upcoming game Quake Champions will be free to play for all players, that is, unless you prefer to buy it.

In a recent interview with Polygon, creative director Tim Willits explained how the game will give players access to a single character, a champion named Ranger, absolutely free. All other champions they can temporarily access by spending an in-game currency known as favor, which cannot be bought with any real money and will apparently be fairly easy to earn when playing the game. Players can also use this currency to purchase other things such as skins.

And if temporarily renting champions isn’t really your thing, you can opt to buy the full priced Champion Pack instead, which will give you infinite access to all characters available at launch from the very start.

Tim Willits states that the reason for utilizing such an approach for Quake Champions is so that it is more “approachable” for a much large audience. He said, “We want to get as many people into the game as possible, especially outside of North America and Western Europe, where we have a massive fan base. So we want to have the flexibility to have a free-to-play option for those people.”

Both categories of players, those who pay and those who make use of the free to play model, will gain access to the same maps and the same game modes. The only difference is how they gain access to the game’s Champions.
