Picking your Eeveelution is the second biggest elemental decision of the Pokemon world, but Pokemon GO players so far have been struggling to get the Vaporeon, Flareon, and Jolteon their hearts desire. For some time, it seemed certain that Eevee would evolve into one of the three at random, but Redditor TheAztek seems to have found the trick to stopping your Eevee from chasing its dreams and forcing it to evolve into what you want. You monster.
Nicknaming your Eevee Rainer, Sparky, or Pyro before evolving will ensure evolution into Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon, respectively. (To change your Pokemon’s name, just head to their stat page and tap the grey pencil to the right of their name.) We’ve tested the trick out countless times, getting our desired fluffball 100% of the time. Outside of our collective attempts, many Redditors are reporting consistent success as well. For good measure, you usually want to restart the app after naming your Eevee, as evolving too quickly after giving the name can leave the game with too little time to register the change.
The nicknames are a callback to the Eevee brothers, four trainers who appeared in The Battling Eevee Brothers of the Pokemon anime. The older three brothers, named Rainer, Sparky, and Pyro, wielded – shocker – Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon. Little fourth brother, Mikey, just gets a plain ol’ Eevee.
