More details were revealed for the upcoming iOS and Android game, Pokémon GO today by via a post on the official site.

The post reveals details on customizing the look of your trainer, the way you’ll use your Pokémon to battle, and some basic information on the microtransactions we can expect in the game.

According to the post, players will be able to customize the look of their trainer in a similar fashion to how they could in the 3DS titles, Pokémon X and Y. Pokémon GO will offer a range of apparel and accessories to make your in-game character unique and will be seen by other players when they visit a gym that you control.

With regards to the battle system, the post noted that you must join one of three teams before you’ll be able to battle your Pokémon with other players. One of the main objectives of Pokémon GO is to control a number of Gyms that can be found at real-life locations in the world. In order to control them, you and the rest of your team must place one Pokémon each into them, and work together to create a balanced and powerful party.

If you come across a Gym that is controlled by another team, you can challenge them and enter battle. You’ll use your Pokémon’s two attacks, and evade the opponent’s attacks by swiping left and right on your touch screen. Winning a battle will reduce that Gym’s prestige, and when this reaches zero, the Gym is up for grabs by your team or any other one in the area. You’ll then boost the prestige of your Gym by training your Pokémon against the defending ones. The higher the prestige of the Gym, the more Pokémon you can assign to it, making it more difficult for other teams to capture.

The post also made a brief mention about other challenges that players will be able to enjoy in Pokémon GO, such as catching Pokémon and exploration. Completing these challenges will unlock achievement medals that appear in your player profile. Think of Gym Badges in the normal Pokémon games but for doing all kinds of different things.

Finally, some basic details were given with regards to microtransactions. While the game will largely function on a free-to-play basis with many of the features being accessible, the option will be there to purchase PokéCoins which can be exchanged for power-ups, extra items, and other enhancements. What these will entail and how much PokéCoins will cost exactly, is yet to be seen.

Pokémon GO’s US Beta Test is due to begin this month and you can still sign up if you’re interested.
