Platinum Games Is Considering A Different Protagonist for Bayonetta 3

A male Bayonetta? It could happen. Maybe.

Platinum Games is holding internal discussions about a potential third Bayonetta game, which could star a new main character instead of the titular Bayonetta.

Speaking with Source Gaming, Platinum Games Head Producer Atsushi Inaba said during Japan’s recent Bit Summit that Bayonetta 3 is something the developer is “constantly” talking about.

Fans probably shouldn’t expect an announcement anytime soon, though, as it sounds like Platinum is merely having discussions about where it could potentially take the series. In other words, it doesn’t sound like development is underway just yet. But when and if Platinum does announce Bayonetta 3, it might have a big surprise in store for fans.

“Maybe there would be a male Bayonetta!” exclaimed a laughing Inaba. “I would like to make Bayonetta 3. We’re talking within the company even now about what to do. But because we’re constantly talking about it, that actually makes it really hard to say [if Bayonetta 3 would star Bayonetta or not].”

Continuing, Inaba added “that’s just something that you talk about when you’re making a series — do you want to keep the same protagonist? There’s plenty of precedent for changing protagonists, and so that is something we discuss – do we want to keep the same one, have a different one, add new ones — but that’s certainly not anything I can say for sure at this point.”

Bayonetta 2, the last game in the series, released exclusively on the Wii U, much to the chagrin of many fans who played the first one on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or PC. But it was Nintendo that published Bayonetta 2, which was a change for the series after Sega published the first game. Nintendo was apparently pretty hands-off when it came to the sequel’s design.

“We started working with Nintendo pretty far along into the development process, so there wasn’t a lot of ‘Hey, we want you to do this and that,’ not too many requests from Nintendo, so we had a lot of freedom to make it the way we wanted to,” Inaba explained. “And we were very grateful to them for that.”

With the game not even being officially announced, it’s unclear whether a potential Bayonetta 3 would again be published by and exclusive to Nintendo. At the same event when Inaba spoke about the possibility of Bayonetta 3, however, he also confirmed the studio is actively working on a new Switch game. Seeing as Platinum is merely discussing Bayonetta 3, it seems unlikely that these games are one and the same, but it does indicate that Platinum has retained a good relationship with Nintendo.
