As of today, Overwatch 2 has temporarily disabled the Antarctic Peninsula map from all game modes due to the dev team having identified potential performance issues with certain heroes. These issues have been listed in the official Overwatch 2 known issues thread and are being worked on by the team to help ensure matches run smoothly in what seems to be part of a very focused approach to fixing known issues and annoyances, as well as rebuilding and reworking certain maps. Here’s a post made by popular Overwatch 2 leaks and news channel, OWCavalry, so you can take a look for yourself:
This makes Antarctic Peninsula the second map to be removed from rotation across all modes in less than two weeks, following the fate of the Hyrbid map Paraiso, otherwise known as the home to speedy Support Hero Lucio.
Thankfully, Map Pools were removed last season, meaning the temporary absence of Paraiso and Antarctic Peninsula isn’t a huge deal for those who enjoy the game. It is actually a very positive decision, as there have been numerous map-related bugs with certain heroes and objects since the launch of Overwatch 2.
The removal of Antarctic Peninsula and Paraiso follows the recent map rework for Watchpoint Gibraltar. It’s great to see that the old Overwatch 1 maps are still receiving necessary attention and care, with the Overwatch team also announcing that players can expect to see more map reworks and new time-of-day variants in the near future.
