According to Canadian retailer, Video Games Plus, Nintendo has ceased production of all Nintendo DS cartridges. While there has been no official word from Nintendo on this, there is also little reason for them to publicly verbalize what everyone else already knows: No one is waiting for new Nintendo DS games.
Since the release of the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo has clearly moved on to bigger and more ambitious pastures, so it comes as no surprise that they would discontinue all production of DS cartridges. Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that this news only comes from Video Games Plus, not from Nintendo themselves, although the retailer did accurately leak the lineup of Nintendo Selects ahead of time. Still, it’s extremely likely considering how long the DS has been out of commission. If anything, the only surprise is that this didn’t happen sooner.
Since the release of Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 in 2012, the Nintendo DS has largely become a vessel for licensed video games, with one of the last games released for Nintendo DS being Lego Friends in November of 2014. Suffice to say, the Nintendo DS is done, through and through. It had a wonderful run with a library of fantastic titles, but it may be time to hang up the cleats and retire.
Don’t let that stop you from trying out the bevy of excellent DS titles available, though. While it’s possible there may not be any new cartridges in circulation, you deseve to try out the best games the handheld system has to offer. The DS isn’t necessarily gone, and it’s far from forgotten. Whether you play on your 3DS or through the Wii U eShop, go ahead and indulge! We’re sure you deserve it.
