Two iconic products from the late 90’s will come together as one in 2019. Nike will release a Nintendo 64-themed Air Max 97 colorway later this year.
These creative throwbacks have a lot more detail than you might notice at first glance. The nods to Nintendo’s legendary system go way beyond the color scheme.
In addition to the recognizable grey of the console and the red/blue/yellow/green of the controller’s buttons are a few other nostalgia-inspiring details.
“Reset” and “Power” adorn each shoe’s respective tongue, there’s a pattern of D-pad arrows along the mudguard, and the typical “Air Max” logo on the heel tab has been modified with the Nintendo oval.
The icing on the cake is the three dots on the tongue’s pull tab (representing the controller inputs) and the play on an ESRB logo on the heel of the insole.
This isn’t the first time Nintendo-inspired Nike sneakers have been released. Back in 2008, the Air Max BW and the Air Max Terra Ninety Hybrid each got their own NES colorways.
The exact release date for these limited edition Air Max 97s has not yet been specified beyond “2019”. When they do come out, they’ll be available for $160 from Nike’s webshop.
