Sony has recently released its digital sales charts for the week of February 19 in Japan, revealing that the Metal Gear spin-off title Metal Gear Survive has managed to surpass Capcom’s Monster Hunter World in terms of sales rankings.

Monster Hunter World now occupies the second spot on the list. Keep in mind that the rankings solely reflect the total sales attributed to each title on Sony’s digital PS4 platform in Japan. Thus, they don’t include PC sales, worldwide sales, or retail sales.

When taking only Japanese retail sales into account, Metal Gear Survive has underperformed against Monster Hunter World by quite a significant margin. Media Crate reported this past week that Capcom’s monster-slaying title sold over 20,000 copies more than Survive in Japan – an accomplishment given the fact that the former game has been on the market since January.

In any case, check out the full list of PS4 digital sales rankings in Japan below:

  1. Metal Gear Survive
  2. Monster Hunter World
  3. Girl Und Panzer Dream Tank Match
  4. NieR: Automata

Seeing as how Metal Gear Survive hasn’t enjoyed the best critical reception since its debut in the west, today’s news may come as a surprise to many. If anything, it’s proof that the Metal Gear franchise is still something people resonate with, at least in Japan.
