Mass Effect Andromeda Won’t Feature a Paragon/Renegade System, Opts for “Shades of Grey”

Can we still punch the reporter?

Mass Effect Andromeda

While we haven’t exactly seen or heard too much about Mass Effect Andromeda since it was officially unveiled at E3 2015, the game’s creative director, Mac Walters, has spoken to Games Radar and provided a bit more information about Andromeda’s morality system. As fans of the original Mass Effect trilogy would know, Shepard’s actions would count towards either his Paragon or Renegade meters, and determine the types of dialogue options you had access to, and the actions you could perform. It looks like Andromeda will be attempting something a little different.

According to Walters, Andromeda will be loosening things up a little. “I think in general, with all this sophistication of games or engaging in any kind of entertainment right now, [gamers are] looking for more of those shades of grey”.

Walters thinks the old system “was a core part of who Shepard was” and fit with the original trilogy, but when it comes to the future, “I think now we’re moving away from that. We’ve been looking for other ways to engage more of those shades of grey; less about it being obviously being right or wrong and more about giving people a sense of choice.”

That’s all fine and dandy, but hopefully EA and BioWare will give us an actual look at the game soon.
