According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo is in talks with Universal’s Illumination Entertainment to bring their signature mascot Mario to the big screen. The animation studio is responsible for the likes of Despicable Me and the Minions.

It wouldn’t be too out of the ordinary for the two companies to reach a deal considering how Nintendo is one of the biggest gaming firms in the world and Universal is one of the biggest film studios in the world. The agreement seems more likely considering how Universal’s theme parks are set to host some Nintendo-themed attractions in the coming years.

The only feature-length movie that Mario and company have fostered comes in the way of the live-action Super Mario Brothers of 1993, which many people today often try to forget ever existed. If Mario does indeed wind up on the big screen once again, Nintendo may be willing to give some of its other franchises the Hollywood treatment, as the company’s CEO Tatsumi Kimishima told Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun last year that the gaming firm is in talks with various entities to create movies based on its characters.

It’s important to note that some of these reported entertainment deals ever come to fruition, as a Netflix series based on The Legend of Zelda was supposedly in early production in 2015, yet never say the light of day. Here’s hoping that Nintendo and Universal are able to reach a deal concerning a Mario movie and that the film is at least better than the aforementioned Super Mario Brothers.
