It has been an impressive year for Nintendo. Between a number of major releases and a brand new console, the company has been dominating. But Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is making the news again. This time as Time’s number one game of 2017.
Naturally, as the end of the year draws to an end, many publications and awards ceremonies are talking about what games were the best. And there hasn’t been a clear-cut winner since very early on. After all, we saw the likes of Persona 5, Super Mario Odyssey, Horizon: Zero Dawn and the list goes on.
But Time has their verdict. And in a list of the Top 10 Video Games of 2017, named the latest title in the Legend of Zelda franchise as the winner.
It’s like nothing else the company has made, an experience so simultaneously prodigious and accomplished that it feels like a mic drop to the sort of “open world” games (Grand Theft Auto V, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, The Witcher 3) the industry seems bent on proliferating. But what drives Breath of the Wild to soar comes down to essential Nintendo design principles.
In fact, Legend of Zelda was not the only Nintendo title on the list and just barely beat out Super Mario Odyssey, which took second place. The third Switch exclusive title on the list was Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, which came in 8th place, beating out Destiny 2 and Horizon: Zero Dawn.
But the real fight is still ahead to see if Link has what it takes to truly reign supreme this year.
