Riot Games, developer of popular multiplayer online battle arena League of Legends, said this week it would “adjust” prices of its real-money currency Riot Points (RP) for players in the United Kingdom later this month.
Starting July 25 at 23:59 BST, the price of RP will be raised by 20% to “restore balance in RP pricing around the world.” Riot said in the announcement that this is a one-time change and existing purchases up until the date will not be affected. The cost of League of Legends champions, cosmetics, and other items will not be affected by the increase.
Riot included a comparison of old and new prices in the announcement, which also retires the £2.50 option and adds a new £15 price point. The adjustment comes after the UK voted to withdraw from the European Union last year, Riot explained, causing the value of the British pound to decrease greatly. The studio assures that UK players who buy RP after July 25 “will receive roughly the same amount that they would get if they exchanged their money into dollars and bought RP in North America.”
Other video game companies have raised prices in Europe due to the inflation. Blizzard Entertainment had increased prices for Hearthstone card packs and some World of Warcraft services last March to account for the referendum, with the pound receiving the highest increase compared to currency in other countries, while Nintendo sold its Switch console at a higher exchange rate for both the pound and euro.
