This year’s League of Legends mid-season update is flooding the rift with dragons – elemental dragons, to be specific. Our age-old drake is getting revamped with a more detailed buff system, one that Riot hopes will keep the objective relevant throughout the game without spilling over into ‘life-or-death mandatory’ territory.

The dragon pit for the first 35 minutes of the game will spawn one of four elemental dragons, each with a unique buff. Fire Dragon will increase damage against enemy champions, Earth Dragon increases damage against turrets and epic monsters, Water Dragon increases mana and health regeneration, and Air Dragon will increase out of combat movement speed. These buffs will stack, and since Riot hasn’t mentioned a cap, let’s all go ahead and assume we can grind air dragons until we can all Hecarim-Homegaurd around the map.

Once an elemental dragon is downed, players on both teams will be able to see the upcoming element on the minimap, like a game of dragon tetris. It’s not yet clear whether or not the order of dragons will follow a pre-determined order.

After 35 minutes, the dragon pit will spawn a much stronger Elder Dragon. The Elder Dragon buff will give spells and attacks a burn-over-time effect, and the update notes also mention “a buff that will be stronger the more elemental buffs you’ve acquired.”
